So, I’ve adopted the black foamie thing as my on camera flash modifier of choice, all good stuff. Works great.
But, with more calls for portrait sessions I kinda had to open my eyes to off camera flash.
There is a huge difference between taking photos of your own kids whilst they get about the business of growing up, but when folk starting paying for pictures of their kids it’s time to up the ante.
I figured I would start at the beginning, although I love the idea of Bowens/Elinchrom moonlights and modifiers, I can’t yet justify the cost. So I bought a basic light stand, wireless triggers and a black/white umbrella to go with my el cheap Yongnuo flash.
It is, at this stage, really trial and error. Despite reading loads on Neil Van Niekerk’s site and watching almost all of Mark Wallace’s Webinar’s, it still ain”t easy.
Practise, practise practise.Luckily I have enough kids that I can usually rope one of them in for 5 minutes at a time.
Well, the outside of it anyway. Not as per the mathematical definition ”the locus of the ultimate intersections of consecutive curves’, more a suggestion to not get out of your box, its safe in there.
Ok, M43 is a well established format now, used by amateurs and Pro’s alike in many different genres. But, I cant help but note, that after APSC and full frame use it is harder to achieve what seems so easy with those larger sensors.
The upside for me is that I tend to have more fun with it. I look for different things to provide the final image. Not to try to get past the performance limits of the camera, but to turn a blind eye to their existence or maybe try and maximise the performance benefits it offers.
Its a great camera. It has compromises……..but, it is still a great camera.
There are times when shooting has an absolute purpose.
Testing a camera or lens. A portrait shoot, macro, or just a walk with the dogs.
Other times I just pull together some random shots, some from today, some from older files, and spend a little time editing.
This is one of those days.
I love editing and this series of images were edited exclusively using Analog Efex Pro, part of The Nik Collection.
You take the picture.
You make the image
